April 2007

I have heard this saying many times in my life, “Getting something out of you is like pulling teeth.” I’ve also heard it in the context, “Working with this person is like pulling teeth.” To me this infers that it’s a painful event, though I’ve never had my teeth pulled before and I’m not a dentist, but my perspective would be from those who talk about getting their teeth pulled. THE ONES IN THE CHAIR.

While I was “pulling teeth” today, I thought to myself, self, what does a dentist think about this saying? Well, maybe pulling teeth is a difficult task when you are the one doing the pulling. Or maybe pulling teeth is a pleasurable break from scraping, poking and drilling teeth. So, is the saying from the dentist’s perspective or the patients perspective. DIFFICULT, BLISSFUL or PAINFUL?

Food for Thought: In the society most of us live in, pulling teeth can be both difficult as a task, and painful as a recipient, but the next time you are “pulling teeth” ask yourself if you know what you are getting into? I pose this question, because if you know what you are getting into your next tooth extraction, may be less or void of both pain and difficulty given the appropriate perspective. Who knows it may be something you may want to do again.

It’s been a while since you have heard from me about the DUSA mobile but whether it’s the weather, the ever growing awareness of going green or the construction activity over at the carousel, we are starting to get some reactions. From an occasional honk, to the honk and wave the DUSA mobile is gaining some notoriety in the Syracuse community.

Does anyone have thoughts on this topic? I live in Syracuse, NY and we have all four of the seasons, a beautiful thing. I’ve lived here for 10 years and understand that we may have extreme winters, but how, and should this effect our mental well being. What does it take to have the weather change your state of mind? As recent as the past few days, I have observed weather’s mind altering power.

It’s now April, and on Monday we had 2-6 inches of snow fall, and most people I ran into said “F-in Syracuse Weather”, completely unprompted. Today it’s above 60 and sunny :), and all the same people say, “Man is it beautiful out there” (notice not “I love Syracuse and its weather”). Guys, this is where we live, there is good, there is bad, and there’s ugly in our weather, as in life. Embrace it all.

I hear things like, “I love the hot weather, I’m gonna move to Florida.” I say, do it if you are passionate about warm weather all the time, but be prepared to embrace their regional weather as well. Two and a half seasons and instead of the bitter cold and snow the North East has to offer, be prepared for Hurricanes and Tornados, it’s natures way.

Weather, where ever we go, is part of the character of where you are, it helps define your environment. Like many “uncontrollable events”, we find weather altering our state of mind. We must identify when it brings us down or changes our moods in a negative fashion. Weather is part of our environment and can not be controlled by us physically (except maybe if we abuse the earth more than we already have, this is another topic) or mentally. Contrary to this statement, our minds can alter the effect the weather has on ourselves and those who we conspire with by embracing its purity as part of nature and for lack of a better term right now “Roll with it”.

I personally don’t like it when we have fourteen straight days of single digit weather, but if this starts altering how I feel or how I interact with others, it’s time either for a change in geography or a good old fashion ass kicking. Use your mind for good, don’t let it be polluted with “mental trash”.

How ironic is it that my new shoes show up right after I decide to hang up the shoes for a bit. I don’t know if it was the release of Alanis Morisett’s version of My Humps that has induced my reasoning for speaking on this irony. My latest challenge is making a decision. Years ago this would have been easy, take it like a man and pony up J. Was I tougher then, or was there more to pony up for. Oh well.

Wow, this could really go into a deep discussion on taboo topics like “Settling” and “Commitment”, or even “What is Standard”, but I think I’ll stay away from that unless there are some comments that take it in that direction.

Instead of going into taboo topics, I’ll veer from the abstract and focus on the concrete. I will be throwing a retirement party for my sneakers this evening at Nibsys. The usual suspects should be their with a new face, my new sneakers. If you’re in town, the Nike (nee’-kay)Triax IX, will be accepting gifts at ~8pm so don’t forget the canes, dentures, and Geratal, those are always a hoot.
